Step 21 – Deceased Estate Administration Guide
Checking Post & Organising Mail Redirection After Death
- Last Updated: March 2024
This step's objective is to emphasise the importance of checking the deceased person's mail regularly to understand of dealings and bills the deceased person has. You can redirect mail after death for the Deceased Estate to make it easier to review if you live further away.
Overview
You should frequently check the letter box or any post-office (PO) boxes the deceased person held. This will allow you to keep track of any correspondence, invoices and notices that you will need to take care of during the administration.
You may be able to put in place a post redirection service to your address to allow you to receive the post at your residence for convenience.Keeping track of the deceased person's mail will allow you to:
- keep oversight of correspondence with Government Departments, Companies and Organisations;
- ensure appropriate action is taken if required;
- find out about other dealings not yet identified until this point in time; and
- keep private dealings separate should the deceased person's home be rented out.

21.1 Set-up a Free Post Redirection Service for 12 months
Australia Post provides a free 12-month post redirection service for Executors and Administrators, or Next of Kin where none of the two formal roles were appointed, when dealing with a Deceased Estate.
You can apply at a post office near you in person. Find your closest post-office here.
Documents you need to bring are:- a completed Application to Redirect Mail Form;
- individual proof of your identity such as an Australian Driver's License; and
- a copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration stating you as the Executor or Administrator, or a Next of Kin if none of the formal roles were appointed.
This service however will likely only be available once you have a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, which is explained in Step 27 – Grant of Probate Application or Applying for Letters of Administration.
It may be worth speaking to Australia Post staff at a branch to check if the free redirection service is already available to you if you bring the above listed form, your proof of identity and the Will naming you as the Executor or other proof that you are a Next of Kin and will be acting as the Administrator and intend to apply to the Supreme Court.
In the meantime, it is important to keep checking the post for any valuable correspondence that helps you administer the Estate.
21.2 Set-up a Paid Redirection Service
If the free 12-month redirection service is unavailable without the legal documents, you may be able to pay for a standard redirection service. The costs vary depending on the duration, starting from $33 (as at January 2021) and may be worth it if you think your time and the cost of travelling to and from the deceased person's home outweighs the cost of the redirection service.
To put in place a paid redirection, complete the Online Application Form on the Australia Post website and identify yourself with your driver's license or other proof of identity as requested.
21.3 Remove Deceased Person's Detail from Advertising
To retain oversight of important correspondence and post, it is recommended that you contact the Association for Data-driven Marketing and Advertising (ADMA) to remove the deceased person's details from any subscription lists.
This should result in fewer advertising or other unsolicited post being sent to the deceased person's last known address, so you have better oversight of the important documents.

Actions and Decisions to Complete Step Yourself
If you have decided to complete this Step yourself, some actions and decisions may be to:
- Check the deceased person's post at least weekly for important correspondence (see Overview above);
- Assess the actions required resulting from correspondence. If you are asked to make a payment, you should be certain that the Deceased Estate is sufficiently solvent and will be able to repay all its debts before doing so (see Step 14 – Paying Deceased's Bills Before Probate (Solvent & Insolvent Estates));
- Redirect post for convenience (see Step 21.1 or Step 21.2 above);
- Inform the Association for Data-driven Marketing and Advertising (ADMA) of the death to remove the deceased person's details (see Step 21.3 above); and
- Update your Assets & Liabilities Inventory each time you find out about another dealing the deceased person had that has a financial impact on the Deceased Estate.
